Bookmaker review
William Hill review
William Hill has been taking bets since 1934, which makes it older than the regulator that now licenses it. That history is the reason it still feels like a racing bookmaker first and a general-purpose sportsbook second: the horse racing product is the part of the site that has had the most thought put into it, and it shows.
A racing account first: Best Odds Guaranteed from 8am is worth more over a season than the sign-up offer.

Licence and who actually runs it
The British business is licensed by the UK Gambling Commission. Since 2022 the UK and Ireland arm has belonged to evoke plc, the group that also owns 888 and Mr Green, so William Hill and 888 sport now sit under the same corporate roof while running as separate products with separate prices. That matters in one practical way: treat their welcome offers as alternatives rather than a pair to collect, because group-level restrictions can apply.
The welcome offer, read properly
New customers get £30 in free bets for a £10 bet with the code R30. The conditions that decide whether it is worth anything:
- The qualifying bet must be a £10 single placed from your own balance, at odds of 1/2 (1.50) or better. Virtual racing does not count.
- Free bets are credited once that first bet settles, win or lose.
- They expire after seven days, and the stake is not returned with a winning free bet – you keep the profit only.
Since 19 January 2026 the Commission caps wagering requirements at ten times, and William Hill applies no wagering at all to free-bet winnings. The seven-day clock is the real constraint: if you bet once a fortnight, you will lose most of the value.
Best Odds Guaranteed is the reason to keep the account
On UK and Irish horse racing, William Hill runs Best Odds Guaranteed from 8am on the day of the race. Take an early price, and if the Starting Price drifts out longer, you are paid at the bigger number automatically. Nothing to claim, nothing to opt into. For anyone who bets on racing in the morning rather than at the off, this quietly returns more over a season than any sign-up offer.
Alongside it sit Extra Each Way Places on selected races, Pick Your Places, and live streaming for funded accounts – the last of which is worth more than it sounds, because it covers meetings that terrestrial television ignores.
Prices and markets
Pre-match pricing is consistently competitive rather than spectacular; William Hill's habit is to be near the top of the market on the main lines instead of chasing headline prices on obscure ones. Player props and Bet Builder coverage on football are deep, and the builder sits inside the in-play screen rather than on a separate tab, so you can react to a market move without navigating away. Bet Boosts are capped at three per day, applied to win or each-way bets from the slip.
App and site
The app carries the full product – racing cards, builder, streaming, cash out – without the feature gaps that some operators still leave on mobile. Cash out is available in full or in part on most singles and accumulators, though as everywhere it is priced in the house's favour and should be treated as a convenience, not a strategy.
Banking
Debit cards, PayPal and bank transfer are the mainstays, with the usual £10 minimum. Credit cards have been banned for gambling across Great Britain since 2020, so no licensed bookmaker will accept one. Withdrawals go back to the method you deposited with; card payouts clear in a couple of working days, PayPal usually faster. Identity verification happens before your first withdrawal rather than after, which is a licence condition and not the operator stalling.
Where it falls short
The site carries a lot of product – sportsbook, casino, Vegas, bingo, poker – and the navigation shows the weight. Odds on minor football leagues are ordinary. And the customer service experience is the one area where the reviews divide sharply: fine when nothing is wrong, slow when something is.
Verdict
A racing account first. If you bet on UK and Irish horses in the morning, Best Odds Guaranteed from 8am and the extra places make William Hill difficult to leave out. For football alone there are sharper prices elsewhere, but few bookmakers are wrong less often.
Playing safely
Everything above assumes you are 18 or over and betting money you can afford to lose. Every operator licensed in Great Britain must give you deposit limits, a reality check, a time-out and self-exclusion from inside your account, and must connect to GAMSTOP, the free national scheme that blocks you from every licensed British site at once. If betting has stopped being entertainment, the National Gambling Helpline is free on 0808 8020 133, open around the clock, and our own page on gambling harm lists the rest.
