Bookmaker review
Betway review
Betway is the bookmaker most British punters meet through its app rather than its website, and that is the right way round: the mobile product is the best part of the operation, and the rest of the sportsbook is built to match it.
The best betting app in Britain, attached to a sportsbook that is deep on three sports and thin everywhere else.
What works
- £40 in free bets for a £10 bet, no code needed
- Top-rated app on both stores, with the full product on mobile
- Very deep markets on Premier League football, tennis and cricket
- #BetYourWay: request a market that does not exist yet
What to watch
- Qualifying odds of 2.00 are the strictest on this site
- The £40 arrives as six separate tokens inside seven days
- Only around thirty sports — no real coverage of niche markets
18+. New customers only. Terms and conditions apply. Gamble responsibly — begambleaware.org.
Licence and standing
Betway Limited holds a UK Gambling Commission licence and has run in Britain since 2006. The group also owns Jackpot City, Spin Casino and Hippodrome Online, which is worth knowing if you collect welcome offers – group brands often share promotional eligibility.
The welcome offer, read properly
New customers get £40 in free bets for a £10 bet. No code needed. The terms that matter:
- The qualifying bet is £10 at minimum odds of 2.00 (evens). That is a higher bar than most rivals ask, and it means a short-priced favourite will not unlock it.
- On settlement the £40 arrives as six free-bet tokens, not one lump. Spreading them takes six separate bets.
- Seven-day expiry, stake not returned on a winner.
Six tokens over seven days is roughly a bet a day. Claim it in a week when you already intend to bet, or you will hand most of it back unspent.
Markets and prices
Betway covers around thirty sports, which is fewer than the biggest books. What it does instead is go deep on the handful it leads on: Premier League football, the tennis majors and cricket get enormous market lists, daily price boosts and player props that rivals do not always carry. On a mid-table Championship match or a lower-tier European league, the market count thins out quickly.
The #BetYourWay builder is the operator's signature. Beyond the standard bet builder, you can request a market that does not exist yet by tweeting the hashtag, and the trading team prices it up and posts it. It is a gimmick that turns out to be genuinely useful for occasional, specific bets.
App
The app is the reason to open the account. It is fast, the navigation is a plain sidebar list of sports rather than a carousel of promotions, and everything – cash out, live streaming, the builder, in-play – is present rather than pared back. Betway consistently rates at or near the top of the British betting app rankings on both stores.
Banking
Debit card, PayPal, Skrill, Neteller and bank transfer, with a £10 minimum. Card and e-wallet deposits are instant; bank transfer takes one to three working days both ways. There are no fees at either end. As with every licensed British operator, credit cards are not accepted and identity checks are completed before the first withdrawal.
Where it falls short
The narrow sport list is a real limitation if you bet outside the mainstream – there is no serious coverage of the niche markets that NetBet or Dafabet will happily price. The minimum odds of 2.00 on the welcome offer is the strictest of the five bookmakers on this site. And the design, while clean, buries the racing product below football in a way racing punters find irritating.
Verdict
The best app in the British market attached to a sportsbook that is excellent on football, tennis and cricket and thin everywhere else. If those three sports are what you bet on, it is close to ideal. If you want breadth, keep a second account.
Playing safely
Everything above assumes you are 18 or over and betting money you can afford to lose. Every operator licensed in Great Britain must give you deposit limits, a reality check, a time-out and self-exclusion from inside your account, and must connect to GAMSTOP, the free national scheme that blocks you from every licensed British site at once. If betting has stopped being entertainment, the National Gambling Helpline is free on 0808 8020 133, open around the clock, and our own page on gambling harm lists the rest.
